Mousavi: People Will Not Forgive Criminals

A Torture Den is Shut in South Tehran

Following the publication of news that a number of prisoners arrested in connection with the public protests over the announced June 12 presidential elections died in prisons and detention centers, and the resulting domestic and international uproar and anxiety, Mir Hossein Mousavi labeled the manner in which detainees and protesters were subjected to as ‘criminal’ and stressed that the public would not ignore the criminal acts that were committed.
In a meeting with teachers associations, while mentioning the ideals that were called for during the 1979 revolution, Mousavi strongly criticized today’s state of affairs in the country and asked, “People wanted freedom then, but where is it today?”
The reformist presidential candidate said the fate of the latest presidential election were caused because “some of state authorities had turned their back towards the Constitution and the ideals [of the revolution]”, adding that “today the regime has no choice but to return to them (i.e. the ideals, structures and Constitution) and I believe that if it does not do so then the public will force them. People will not retreat from the path they have chosen.”
Mousavi has contested the June 12 Presidential elections and rejected the official approval and announcement declaring Ahmadinejad the winner. In addition, he has been complaining about the manner in which protesters who have protested against the official election results have been treated and said that the reason why officials treated the public in that manner, adding, “they did not anticipate that such large protests would erupt in such a short time. Their plans were badly implemented with lots of damage. They underestimated people’s power. They did not understand people’s anger and street protests, missing the depth of the problem, and thus created this problem for the country and for themselves.”

In his talk, Mousavi said that calling the popular protests ‘an insurgency’ was an indication of not property understanding people’s sentiments, adding that “This issue will not pass in a few months whereby people will forget everything thus ending the matter.”

At Least Return the Bodies of the Dead
“We did not want such a system,” Mousavi told his audience referring to the practices of Ahmadinejad’s administration, while also criticizing the disregard of public demands and the constitution by military and security institutions of the country. “Did we really call for a system that arrested people at midnight, that destroyed the homes of students and people, and demolished their cars? And when asked for accountability, all agencies from the ministry of intelligence to the Basij said that they were not involved in these. Where did they come from? Did these people come from mars?” Mousavi pointedly asked the members of the audience.
In his talk, Mousavi called the murder and arrest of protesting citizens a ‘catastrophe’, and added, “I shall remind those that engage in perpetrating such crimes that people remembered those who had committed crimes prior to the 1979 revolution and gave them what they deserved. People will not forego these crimes.”
“At least return their (dead) bodies to their families. Why do you cause such pain onto people? Why do you make people angry? Why do you humiliate people? People have a right to know where their children are buried,” Mousavi proclaimed.

Order to Shut a Detention Center
As Mir Hossein Mousavi has been calling the detention and murder of protesters in the country’s detention centers to be illegal acts of the government and its agents, ayatollah Khamenei’s representative at the National Security Council announced that the leader of the Islamic regime had ordered the closure of a detention center on grounds that it “lacked the necessary standards” .
The remarks made by Khamenei’s representative regarding the closure of this detention center and that the way in which protestors was unlawful are raised at a time when the Majlis too, after the publication of the deaths at detention centers, formed an investigative committee two days ago to look into these issues and has sent representatives to Evin and Rajai Shahr prisons (in Tehran and Karaj) to take a look at the conditions under which detainees are being held.
