Islamic Republic Forges Ahead with New Executions - 2008.11.30

On Wednesday 7 of Azar 10 prisoners were executed in Evin Prison and the number of ‎individuals executed in Iranian prisons in the past 5 days reached 15. Wednesday’s most ‎famous executed individual was Fatemeh Haghighat-Pajouh, who was convicted of ‎murdering her temporary husband through “Sigheh.” ‎

Fatemeh had confessed to the murder but claimed in court that she murdered her ‎temporary husband because he intended to rape Fatemeh’s 14-year-old daughter. ‎

Though protests by human rights activists had halted this 37-year-old woman’s execution ‎twice already, once in 1383 and again in 1385, but she was hanged at Evin Prison on ‎Wednesday morning as her attorney, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, was not allowed to visit ‎her for the last time hours before the execution. ‎

Meanwhile, the Fars news agency reported that 9 other prisoners were executed on ‎Wednesday morning at Evin Prison. ‎

Jaberi, the judge in charge of overseeing Tehran judiciary’s judgments, told the news ‎agency that the 10 individuals executed at Evin Prison were “murderers convicted to ‎Ghesas” [retaliation] and were hanged. ‎

ISKA news also reported details of cases of 10 executed individuals on Wednesday. ‎

According to this news agency, two of the hanged individuals, “Yousef G.” and “Mostafa ‎A.” were 36 and 25 years old respectively, and convicted to death in 1385 by branch 71 ‎of Tehran’s criminal court and the confirmed by branch 33 of the supreme court for ‎involvement in armed robbery and one count of murder. ‎

A fourth individual who was hanged for killing his 70-year-old friend in 1384 was named ‎Ali and he was 35-years-old. He also was convicted by branch 71 ofTehran’s criminal ‎court and approval of branch 33 of the supreme court.‎

The fifth individual, “Abbas J.,” was convicted for murdering his friend in 1383 by ‎branch 71 of Tehran’s criminal court and approval of branch 27 of the supreme court

The sixth and seventh individuals, “Ali” and “Mohsen,” who were hanged yesterday in ‎Evin, were convicted by branch 71 of Tehran’s criminal court for kidnapping and ‎eventually murdering their friend while asking his family for a 15 million Toman ransom ‎payment. ‎

The eight individual was the 39-year-old “Masoud.” He was sentenced to death by ‎branch 71 of Tehran’s criminal court for murdering a driver in 1382 while attempting to ‎steal his car in an armed robbery attempt. ‎

The ninth individual was “Amir Hossein Sh.,” who was sentenced to death by branch 71 ‎of Tehran’s criminal court for armed robbery and one count of murder in 1385. The age ‎of this hanged individual was not revealed on Wednesday. ‎

The tenth individual was “Salman,” who was 46-years-old, who committed a murder ‎during a family dispute and convicted to death by branch 1606 of Tehran’s criminal ‎court. He was hanged on the morning of Wednesday, 7 of Azar of 1387 at Evin Prison. ‎

‎5 Other Executions‎

In addition to the 10 individuals hanged on Wednesday at the Evin Prison, 5 other ‎individuals were also hanged on Saturday and Monday in Tehran and other cities. ‎

Last Saturday the head of intelligence ministry’s counter-intelligence unit announced that ‎Ali Ashtari, the head of an advanced communications import company who conducted ‎purchases for military and security firms in the Islamic Republic, was executed. Ali ‎Ashtari was charged with “spying for Israel.” ‎

Though the head of intelligence ministry’s counter-intelligence unit announced following ‎Ashtari’s execution that he was arrested in 1385, the news of his arrest was announced ‎only last summer during one of his hearings. ‎

Ashtari told the Fars and IRNA news agencies on 10 Tir of present year, “I was pulled ‎into this activity unintentionally and served for many years my country, regime and ‎various institutions. My services are documented and my resume speaks for itself.” ‎

On Monday, 4 of Azar, 3 individuals were hanged in Zahedan on charges of “drug ‎trafficking,” according to the ISNA news agency. ‎

Hossein Nahtani, Abdollah Dehmordeh and Mohammad Barahouyee are the names of 3 ‎individuals executed on convictions by Sistan and Baluchistan’s revolutionary court. ‎

The 15th individual who was hanged in recent days remains unidentified. He was hanged ‎on Monday, 4 of Azar, at Mashhad’s central prison. In a short report the Ghods ‎newspapers revealed that he was hanged for murdering his wife in Aban of 1385 at ‎Torbat Heidariyeh. ‎

The Mashhad prisoner’s execution was carried out on conviction by branch 3 of ‎Khorasan’s criminal court and approval of branch 41 of the supreme court. ‎

Executions continue to be carried out despite the United Nations’ request on member ‎nations to suspend execution sentences. ‎

According to published reports, and counting the 15 executions in the last 5 days, the ‎number of executions in Iran reached 217 cases in the present year, retaining Iran’s ‎second place position in number of executions.‎

Execution of seven juveniles in Iran in the past year places the Islamic Republic in first ‎place in the world for executing juveniles. ‎
