Controversy over Removal of Interior Minister
MP's Lobby in Support of Pourmohammadi - 2008.04.20

Though two days ago a conservative news website reported that the supreme leader is opposed to Ahamdinejad’s decision to remove the Interior Minister from post, the “Jomhouri Eslami” daily reported yesterday in a column titled, “For Your Information,” that during a Sunday night cabinet meeting Ahmadinejad “thanked the Ministers of Finance and Interior for their efforts and said that their services will be utilized in other government posts.”
Jomhouri Eslami’s report from the Sunday night cabinet meeting is concluded with the following words: “With the president’s remarks, the tenures of Mr. Pourmohammadi and Mr. Danesh Jafari were officially ended and they will leave their offices in two weeks.”
On the other hand, Aftab news website quoted a Majlis representative, who did not want his name to be revealed, that Mohammad Reza Bahonar, deputy Speaker of the seventh Majlis, is negotiating to reverse the decision to remove Pourmohamadi and has met with a number of government officials for that purpose. This news website reported that Bahonar had met with Pourmohammadi at the Interior Ministry’s building on Monday, adding, “Informed sources have reported that Bahonar promised Pourmohammadi that he will be reappointed to his post.”
Contradictory reports about the removal and reappointment of Mostafa Pourmohammad were also broadcasted on national television. Commenting on the removal of Interior and Finance ministers, the anchorman for the “Bist Si” [Twenty-Thirty] news bulletin said, “Act like you didn’t hear this from us, but apparently it has been decided that one of them will stay and the other will leave.” The news anchorman did not reveal which one of the two will remain and which one is set to leave.
The news, coupled with Bahonar’s lobbying to keep Pourmohammadi at his post, demonstrates that, despite previous expectations, the possibility of the removal of Ahmadinejad’s Interior Minister has risen, unless a more powerful force comes to the ex-minister's aid. Aftab website reported that some Majlis deputies were gathering signatures for a letter drafted in support of Pourmohammadi; a letter that was signed by 130 seventh Majlis MP’s, according to the website report.
