Leftist Students Subjected to Severe Torture

Shocking News from Inside Prison - 2008.03.31

A new report has been published documenting the torture of leftist students held in Iranian ‎prisons. ‎

The Center for Political Prisoners in Iran (In Exile) [Kanun-e Zendanian-e Siasi-e Iran (Dar ‎Tab'eed)] has released a report documenting the recent treatment of leftist students held in ‎prison. The report states, "Officers from the Iran's Ministry of Intelligence, which runs Evin ‎Prison's Ward 209, have reverted to inhumane practices in order to suppress freedom- and ‎justice-seeking movements. Following the second round of arrest of freedom- and justice-‎seeking students, officers from the Ministry of Intelligence proceeded to organize a birthday ‎ceremony for one of the detained students, and forced all the leftist students to attend the so-‎called ceremony." ‎

The report continues, "In the middle of the ceremony, and while the students were attempting to ‎quietly communicate with one another and get information regarding each others' conditions, two ‎of the most prominent figures in the leftist student movement, Peyman Piran and Behrouz ‎Karimizadeh, were brought into the ceremony wearing blindfolds. With the removal of the ‎blindfolds and the appearance of the faces of the two students, a wave of disbelief and sadness ‎took over those present. The appearance and physical condition of these two students were so ‎saddening and horrible that a number of students broke into crying. According to a Tehran ‎University student, when one of the detained students was trying to whisper something in ‎Behrouz Karimizadeh's ear, he was met with the bitter smile of Behrouz Karimizadeh, who told ‎his colleague that he has lost his hearing in one ear, and if there is anything to be said, it must be ‎said into his right ear."‎

In another part of the report, a shocking picture is portrayed of the condition of the two students ‎mentioned above: "There were clear signs of cigarette burns on Behrouz Karimizadeh's hands, ‎on the parts not covered by his sleeves. The detained students then noticed Payman Piran's ‎manner of walking. Rather than walking, Piran was essentially crawling on the floor. Instead of ‎lifting his legs when walking, he pulled them on the ground. In the middle of this so-called ‎birthday ceremony, Piran told an Allameh University student that his ankles and the soles of his ‎feet were injured due to heavy lashing." ‎

The report adds: "Unfortunately, due to the terror and fear imposed by the Islamic Republic's ‎security organizations on the students that have been released in the past few days, none of them ‎are willing to speak with reporters and recount their prison treatment. Even the strongest ‎students break into crying when asked about prison conditions and tortures imposed on them. ‎The news of Behrouz Karimizadeh and Peyman Piran's condition is twenty days old, and was ‎publicized only when two of the detained students shared their stories amidst heavy crying in a ‎private gathering… Unfortunately, however, this is only a small part of a tragic and shocking ‎reality the eye-witnesses to which refrain from disclosing its full bounds." ‎

The report concludes in the end, "We ask all freedom- and justice-seeking activists across the ‎globe not to remain silent in face of the Islamic Republic's anti-human rights behavior and ‎continue to work toward the release of all political and ideological prisoners who are subject to ‎inhumane treatment in Iran's prisons." ‎
