This is Shameful
Ayatollah Khamenei on International Monitors for Elections - 2008.01.13
A week after the Liberation Movement of Iran called for international supervision of Iran’s forthcoming parliamentary elections, which was followed by attacks by right wing media such as Keyhan and Resalat, ayatollah Khamenei called such an invitation as the biggest insult to the Iranian nation, thus ending the debate on the subject.
He called on the Iranian people to vote in the eight Majlis elections with full knowledge. And without referring to the role that the appointed members of the Guardian Council play vetting candidates and controlling the elections process, which is the criticism that pro-democracy movement and individuals who have decided to boycott the elections make, he called the elections in the Islamic Republic to be reflective of freedom. In his talk to the people of Qom, he denounced the monarchial regime that ended in 1979, and called on the religious leaders of the country to induce the public to participate in the forthcoming elections.
Calling elections to be one of the key elements of the greatness of the Iranian nation and the Islamic regime, Khamenei added, “Elections, which are reflective of democracy, have been held in Iran about once a year on the average during the past 28 years. This is indicative of the victory of the Iranian nation because it showed people’s participation, people’s decisions and the courage of the Islamic order to depend on the vote and wishes of the people.
He expressed disappointment over the words of those who called for supervision against fraud in the elections and said that during the last 28 years, elections in Iran had been held in the absolute perfect manner, and questioned why did some individuals discredit the respect of the elections, which he said he hoped was not ill-intended.
The leader of the Islamic regime called the requests of some individuals for international supervision by the enemies of the state as “shameful” and the “biggest insult to the Iranian nation.” He said, “Executive and supervisory officials have always been perfect in their duties to perform what they have been entrusted with , and they will repeat the same in the forthcoming eight Majlis elections.”
“The public and those who are verbally supported by the President of the United States must ponder why America wishes to support. What has been their role that makes the United States keen on supporting them. In addition to distancing themselves from the enemy, political groups and individuals must also disassociate themselves from foreign stooges, puppets and those who are in the service of foreigners,” he said.
During former president Khatami’s administration and on the even of the Majlis elections, reformers and those groups that were critical of the Guardian Council’s appointed decisions, who also planned to take a plan to the Majlis to cancel the elections, ayatollah Khamenei banned any discussion about the interference of the Guardian’s Council in the elections and through this threat shut any public discussion of the issue.
Even though supervision by appointed officials was an authority that was approved by the right-wing factions of the third Majlis who had a majority in the legislative body, members of the sixth Majlis believed that by passing legislature they could return to the atmosphere of the elections of the first decade of the revolution in the 1980s. They did not intend to give authority to the 12 members of the Guardians Council to filter out candidates to the elections.
